Obituary of Philip Von Blon

Philip Von Blon Philip Von Blon 88, died peacefully at home in Tucson, Arizona on February 3, 2010. His death was caused by complications from a fall. Born September 4, 1921 in New York City, Phil graduated from Amherst College in 1943. He has lived in Minneapolis since 1945, when he joined the International Milling Company. In 1960 he was name Vice-President of Finance for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune Company. In 1970 he started the Minneapolis office of what is now the global investment firm Alliance Bernstein. Phil was a founder and Lifetime Board Member of the Guthrie Theater. His long interest in contemporary art led him in 1958 to join the board of Walker Art Center, where he eventually became an Honorary Trustee. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joanne Witmer Von Blon; his younger brother, Robert Von Blon of St. Augustine, FL; his daughter, Margaret and her husband Angus Wurtele; his daughter, Martha and her husband Tom Meyer. He has three grandsons, Andrew, Martin and Henry Meyer; and three step-grandchildren, Chris and Andrew Wurtele and Heidi Wurtele Castelein. He was predeceased by his grandson, Philip Otis. An immediate gathering of friends will be held in Tucson; a Minneapolis Memorial service will be announced at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the Guthrie Theater or Walker Art Center in Minneapolis or the charity of your choice.
