Obituary of Janet Louise Falsgraf

Janet Price Falsgraf was born January 16, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio and lived an active and

fulfilling life until she died Friday July 5 in Tucson, Arizona. Despite living with esophageal cancer for her final eighteen months, she remained fully engaged in life. An enthusiastic lifelong

traveler, she returned from her final trip six days before her death and watched fireworks

with friends the night she died.

The daughter of two schoolteachers, Janet grew up in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights with her two sisters Polly and Mary, who survive her. It was in junior high school that she first befriended Bill Falsgraf, who managed her successful campaign for class president. They began dating in high school, married in 1956 and remained in love and inseparable until July 5, 2019.

Janet graduated from Pembroke College in Brown University and taught elementary school until the births of her children, Carl, Jeff, and Kit. While raising three children, she was deeply engaged in the social and civic life of her community, serving as president of the League of Women Voters of Cuyahoga County and Executive Director of the Criminal Justice Information Center. She strongly supported and shared in Bill’s work with the American Bar Association, culminating in his election as president of the organization in 1983. Through this work, she established a network of lifelong friends throughout the country.

Janet traveled the world with Bill for both business and pleasure, visiting every continent except Antarctica. She was a traveler, not a tourist, often going on study tours led by professors who lectured on the history, geography, geology and cultures of the places she visited.

Janet is survived by the love of her life, Bill Falsgraf; her three children, Carl Falsgraf, Jeff Falsgraf, and Kit Chaskin and their spouses, Vicki Falsgraf, Ellen Falsgraf, and Robert Chaskin; and four grandchildren, Natalie Falsgraf, Hannah Chaskin, Erika Falsgraf, and Nicholas Chaskin.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to:
