Obituary of Stephen James Franz

Stephen James Franz was born April 3, 1964 to Faris and Esther Franz. His formative years were spent growing up in Indianapolis, central Florida, and west of Indianapolis. He graduated from Hanover College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art, and went onto complete his Master’s Degree in Ethnomusicology at the University of Memphis in 1994 with an emphasis on the blues. His life’s focus became the blues. Between his definitive book on “The Amazing Secret History of Elmore James,” and his extensive podcasts of “Blues Unlimited” (300-400 episodes) as host Sleepy Boy Hawkins, he became well known as an authority on all things related to the blues. “The Amazing Secret History of Elmore James," published in 2002, was selected as one of the "100 Books Every Blues Fan Should Own," and was later translated into Japanese in 2006.

Steve was the host and independent producer of the NPR-style two-hour weekly radio show “Blues Unlimited” that explored the wonderful world of the blues, its history, heritage, and rich cultural traditions. It had repeatedly been called the best program of its kind currently on offer in the United States market, with an established loyal audience from around the globe. Available online at bluesunlimitedradio.com The episodes should remain available for some time.

Through his work as a blues historian, author, and producer, Steve became a friend and mentor to many people. The last ten years of his life he resided in Tucson, AZ where he produced his radio show. He loved to take road trips, in part as a contemplative exercise, and also as a means to connect with his many friends across the US. He encouraged others to pursue their passions and interests in life and found joy in sharing his knowledge of all things Blue.

Steve died suddenly and unexpectedly July 30, 2019 of an ascending aortic dissection. He is survived by his two older brothers, Andrew of Tampa, FL and Ernest of Port Townsend, WA. His extensive blues collection of journals, magazines, taped interviews, LP’s, CD’s, books, and research materials have been donated to the University of Memphis libraries. His book on Elmore James is being evaluated for further publication by the Universities of Memphis and Mississippi.
