Jeffrey McBride's Eulogy:
If we could parallel a person’s whole life to just a single day, I would
think that the early morning hours are our birth and infancy. The day
would be the body of our life and our older years, our retirement years
would be the evening, or night time. Moving into the nighttime of his
life my father moved out to Arizona, where he could continue to work
and supply for his family in Ohio. Ken’s wife Sandy deciding to stay
back to continue caring for the family, especially her grandsons Cory
and Zach and Josh and granddaughter Makenzie.
We have a beautiful cactus here in the desert called the Night blooming
Cereus. I like to think of pops as the flower that buds from this Cereus,
blooming and spreading its pedals to absorb the moonlight and the
sweet desert night air-reaching out for the newness of life and its
aromas. Once Dad arrived here in Tucson he opened fully, like the
Cereus, eagerly exploring and discovering all that the southwest and
the desert offers. He found peace in the endless dusty landscapes. He
refreshed in the mountain air by driving his Harley up to the top of
mount lemon- to read abouts planes or to console himself in special
passages from his bible-or even to just bask in the Arizona sunshine
amidst the fragrant pine. If it wasn’t the mountain or desert road that
day, he would be rollerblading around Reid Park or packing up his metal
detector gear to hit the mountains for treasures!
It was these endless adventures and his thirst for the southwest that
allowed Dad to flower into someone new. Through all the visits to
Tombstone, Kingmen, Wilcox, Globe and all the little towns in between.
Father found a new persona in himself: that of Cowboy! And Ken was a
determined man to echo the look and flavor of a true Cowboy. Dad
would always return from a Tombstone trip looking more authentically
western! A younger Kenneth McBride would laugh at the thought of a
small-town steel mill family man, kicking up his boots and spurs
strutting thru the Old O’ West. With his signature moustache and
cowboy hat- that was Dad here in Tucson.
After snow birding to and from Ohio for a bit and feeling lonely on his
Desert Adventures, Pops wanted mom out with him. Sandy felt the
family in Ohio were doing well so she upped and rejoined her husband
here in Tucson. Once rejoined Mom and Dad picked up where they left
off, again spending days driving the desert roads and growing their
church family. It was many years that they had here together going on
day trips just to drive and enjoy each other's companionship. it was in
these years that they renewed their love for each other and they also
strengthened their relationship with the church. Mom and Dad were
committed members of Streams in the Desert and enjoyed getting with
friends to worship. Pops would assist in the Church’s communion and
eventually became ordained to bring communion to folks who could
not make it to church. Dad even presented himself to Todd and Caitlin
and they agreed to have him Officiate their wedding vowels! Both
mom and dad went thru Via De Cristo to further nurture and deepen
their beliefs.
Dad may have discovered another version of himself living in AZ, but
what hadn’t changed was his love for family, and those who needed a
hand up. He connected with people thru his heart. The heart in his
chest may have had palpitations, needed an upgraded valve and even a
pace maker to keep it in tempo. But Dad always mused to mom and
Jesus that the dr.s rave about the strength of his heart. He would say
that his heart would need turned off because it would keep running
after he passes! He showed us the strength of his heart in all the
generous deeds he, with moms' hand, did for family and others. Both
he and mom would extend themselves when they saw folks in need.
From buying a hungry soul dinner, to helping out young couples just
starting life together. These things they did thoughtlessly and with
love.
This Love and Caring did not end in the passing of Sandy McBride.
Dad's heart and his desire to still blossom in the night went on. Pops
soon found a new life and love in Christina Evens. A kindred spirit to
pops and the Love of getting out into the world to enjoy its aromas.
The Young Lovers would continue the adventures into the wild west,
visiting towns and tucked away sunny sites to enjoy the company of
each other. Ken and Christina would even pull themselves up by the
boot straps and travel across the nation. A 4-wheeler attached to the
Sonic, Christina and Poppi drove all the way to Youngstown to see the
family, unload the 4-wheeler and attend his 3
rd
grandson’s wedding,
and then continue on to Barnstead, New Hampshire to visit Christina’s
daughter and son in law. They would return that grand distance back
to Tucson with a short stop back in Youngstown. Talk about adventure
and determination!
Although their years together were short, Dad and Christina truly
loved each other. They helped and encouraged the other to enjoy Life.
Together they would continue the caring from the heart, for folks who
needed a little love and help.
It wasn’t dad’s heart that gave out, he was right! His heart beating
on until he could no longer gather a breath. All those years ago Sandy
leaving the world to the loss of her breath, now father following suit.
We McBride's like a little irony in our passing.
But Ken’s heart does go on. It beats on in his widow whom he cared
for with all his being to his end. Kens heart continues in his 2 brothers
he loved so much. His 4 sons all of which he was so proud. Their wife's
he embraced as his own daughters. His heart continues in the
grandsons he cherished and mused over. His granddaughter, the girl
that had the sweetest and warmest corner of his heart. Kenneth’s
heart beats in his 3 great-grandchildren: 2 in Ohio and Lucas, the
McBride’s very first Arizona native. Poppi's heart also beats on in his
friends, his Tucson family, and his worship family here at Streams
We will miss you Dad! Your Love, your gentle eyes and mustached
smile and your pace-maker heart!
Thank you for coming out today and celebrating our amazing father,
Kenneth Lee McBride
