Obituary of Marita Larkin

God welcomed Marita Oppenheim Larkin into heaven on June 29, 2015 after a wonderful life of 94 years! She was born in Coldwater, OH on January 31, 1921, the oldest of Theodore and Anne Mathias Oppenheim’s seven children. She graduated from Coldwater High School as the Valedictorian of her 1939 Senior Class, and she received her BA Degree from St. Mary’s Notre Dame College in South Bend, IN in 1943. She earned her Masters of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago’s Goodman Theater in 1945. She began her teaching career in Aurora, IL and continued teaching at St. Joseph’s Carondelet Academy when she moved to Tucson in 1947. Marita married F. Edward Larkin, a Tucson attorney, in 1949 and together had three children: Susie, Lynn, and Mike. Marita dedicated her life to service and volunteered at numerous organizations. She served as a docent at the Tucson Museum of Art (President 1974-1975), a Eucharistic Minister at Saints Peter & Paul Church and the University Medical Center, a lay associate of the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a member of the Pima County Bar Auxiliary, and an officer of the Newman Sustaining Board (President, 1966-1967). Marita volunteered at the Tucson Little Theater, The Girl Scouts of America, the Tucson Symphony, and the Tucson Mobile Meals Program. Marita was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Anne Oppenheim; her husband, F. Edward Larkin; her brothers, Walter Oppenheim and Vincent Oppenheim; and her brother-in-law, Dr. Ernest P. Barlock. She is survived by her children Susie Heintz (Jim); Lynn Larkin Flanagan (Frank); Michael Larkin (Andrea); her brother, Fr. Frank Oppenheim(SJ); her sisters, Virginia Barlock, Sr. Ramona Oppenheim (Maryknoll); Rose Marie Dilenschneider (Jack); and her sisters-in-law, Joan Oppenheim and Geneva Oppenheim. Also, God gifted Marita with six grandchildren: Michael Flanagan (Laura), Patrick Flanagan, and Laura Flanagan Raub (Chris); Edward Larkin, Ted Larkin, and Grace Larkin; and one great- granddaughter, Nora Flanagan. Our family would like to thank Home Instead of Tucson and Casa de La Luz Hospice for their loving care of our mother. Services will be on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 1946 E Lee St, Tucson, AZ 85719 Rosary – 10:00 AM; Mass of the Resurrection – 10:30 AM with burial in Holy Hope Cemetery.
