Obituary of Onas Van Winkle

Life Legacy Onas Van Winkle, (aka Van or Rip), 83 passed away peacefully on March 11, 2016, of complications associated with lung disease. He is survived by Daughters DiAnne Brogna, Carol Shoemake and Son David (Cinda) Van Winkle, Step Daughters Linda Railsback, Sherrie Smart, seven grand children and thirteen great grand children. Onas was one of nine children born to Ross and Ina Lelia (Goad) Van Winkle (Bradford Arkansas). He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Mabeline, Ruby and Wanda Lee, two brothers Jimmy and Teddy Gene. Survived by two sisters Joyce (Red) Schultz, Bernice Simmons both of Batesville Arkansas, and one brother Jay Van Winkle, Tucson Arizona. In the early 1950’s Onas enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed at Davis- Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, Arizona. Boot camp training, specializing in Airframe Repairman occurred at Amarillo Air Force Base, Texas. He served time in the Korean War as an aircraft maintenance technician, and upon receiving his honorable discharge, enlisted for an additional five years in the Air Force Reserves. Upon completion of barber school, Onas worked in several local shops until which time he could venture out on his own. He owned and operated Skyline Barber shop until the early 1970’s. During this time he was an active member and served as President of the local Barbers Union. After closing his shop he accepted employment at Arizona Glass of Tucson as an installer and later chose to drive moving vans for North American Van Lines until his retirement. He actively participated in Moose Lodge 747 and served in various positions including Governor of the Club. Additionally, Onas enjoyed bowling for many years, often holding secretarial positions within the leagues that he bowled. Family outings such as camping and fishing were favorite pastimes as well as an occasional golf game. He was an avid fan of professional baseball following stats of up and coming players as well as known established players and coaches. He especially enjoyed following the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. A “Celebration of Life” will be held on April 23rd, 2016 at 1:00PM, hosted by grandson Tom (Jennifer) Rose.
