Obituary of Lucia Slates

Lucia Slates, 56 of Tucson, AZ- Lucia was a long-time resident of the Tucson area and passed on Thursday the 3rd of November in the comfort of her home. Born on October 7th in 1960, in Mesa, AZ. Brought upon this earth from her parents Mercedes Fernandez and Bernie Gonzales. She was raised by her mother Mercy and Rufino Fernandez in Nogales, AZ with her brothers. Eventually she had moved to Las Vegas and had her only child Veronica Carrillo. Years later, she had made her way back to Arizona to pursue her daughter and grandchildren. Lucy received her GED from the state of Nevada in ‘83. Lucy had the passion of always wanting to help so many people in so many ways. Her interests and loves were art, antiques, dancing, playing musical instruments and making jewelry. From having love for her hat collections to having the smallest connections with her knick knacks. Lucy was so into the Native American Heritage that she would wear feathers in her hair, wore Indian jewelry, and basically warpaint for makeup. She also gave herself the nickname “India” which most of her friends knew her as. Most would have considered her an angel of the streets simply for the fact that she always roamed them, but mainly because of how much she showed her infinite love and care for everyone she encountered. She would volunteer at churches and brought many food boxes to all who she could and would even share candy with the neighborhood kids. She never had much financially but was so rich in the heart that she would always give one way or another. At this time we celebrate the fact that this angel has finally found her way back through the gates of heaven and is where she belongs in peace. She is survived by her daughter Veronica Carrillo, her three grand-children Enrique, Anissa, and Nevaeh. Her mother Mercy and her father Bernie, brothers Jarrett Dante and Morey and Jaime Fernandez. The Angel Valley Funeral Home will be entrusted with the arrangements with her celebration of life on Tuesday, November 15th at 4:30pm. Dinner/potluck reception to follow at the family home.
