He was born in San Mateo, California on September 14, 1962, the son of Robert Klinger and Catherine Christensen. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay area as well as Lake Tahoe and Carson City, Nevada. He graduated in 1980 from Homestead High School in Sunnyvale, California. In the last few years of his life, he worked as a realtor in Rocky Point, Mexico where he made many new friends and connections; and also began organizing and running tours to various locations such as Rocky Point, Albuquerque, and Canyon Lake. John enjoyed travel with his journeys taking him to many places including Hawaii and New York, and just about everywhere in-between; Vancouver and Alberta, Canada; and Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He loved spending time outdoors doing activities like hiking, camping, skiing, and long walks on the beaches of Rocky Point. He loved his large family and extensive network of friends.
